Carew High Cross
Carew High Cross submitted by TheCaptain : Passing by towards the end of a beautiful sunny day, just had to take photos of the cross in the low golden sunshine. This is the western face of the cross. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The tallest ancient cross in Wales at 14 feet tall, it is richly carved with Celtic designs and human/animal symbols. It stands not far from Carew Castle.

Dating from the 10th-11th century, Carew Cross is a 14 foot high wheel-headed cross commemorating Maredydd, king of Dheubarth, who was killed in battle (1035) by Cynan ab Seisyllt who had invaded SW Wales.

It is decorated with plaitwork patterns, scrolls and other intricate Celtic ornamentation.

The Carew High Cross is recorded as Coflein NPRN 103458, which tells us: "(the cross) is known to have moved at least twice since its construction in the decades preceding the Norman Conquest; immediately following its being placed in state care in 1923, and again during the Second World War, when it was temporarily dismantled and stored. The Coflein records includes photographs of the cross, plus details of 4 associated sites.

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for the Carew Cross, Pembrokeshire, Wales, which includes a description of the cross, background information about the nearby castle and a list of reference sources for more information.
