BodMoor visited on 3rd Jun 2015 - their rating: Amb: 5 I live nearby. There is a popular local belief that there is a tunnel leading from somewhere close to the chapel into the "old village centre". It is believed that the tunnel was used by the people of the chapel to collect alms from the villagers to give to its diseased charges. The tunnel was supposedly deliberately covered over, at some time in the past, using one of the large granite boulders nearby, as it had become a danger to inquisitive children. How accurate this is, I have no idea. I mention it as it is a local belief only.

Roche Rock
Roche Rock submitted by h_fenton : Roche Rock, Photographed from the northeast. There are climbers on the rock which help to indicate scale. A low level, horizontal kite aerial photograph ! 8 April 2010 (Vote or comment on this photo)
On top of Roche Rock, is a ruined chapel (dedicated to St Michael) perched dramatically at the top. Roche Rock has many folkloric tales associated with it, the two most famous being the legend of Jan Tregeagle, a seventeenth century magistrate, who after death found refuge in the chapel and the other being part of the Tristan and Iseult tale.

Roche Rock stands out as a rocky outcrop some 20 metres high on the northern flank of the St Austell granite with an approximate outcrop of some 600m x 300m. The rock is of interest to geologists as it is a fine example of quartz shorl: a fully tourmalinised granite, with black tourmaline crystals.

The Rock itself lies 500 metres north of the northern margin of the St Austell granite, the smallest of the five main apophyses of the Hercynian batholith of Southwest England. The outcrop is considered to have been close to the roof of the a intrusion as indicated by the presence of numerous pegmatites occurring as sheets and containing abundant miarolitic cavities carrying quartz, tourmaline, zinnwaldite, topaz and a wide range of other phases.

Roche Rock
Roche Rock submitted by TimPrevett : SW992596. This amazing location, I first noted on our holiday to Cornwall in 2002; we left The Eden Project at closing time, and were directed out a different way, and found ourselves trying to orient our journey back in the correct direction; in so doing, we came along the road nearest this rock outcrop, and I saw it against the lowering sun. Woooo.... Two tired kids meant that we could not stop... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Roche Rock
Roche Rock submitted by theCaptain : Passing on the way to visit the Eden Project, the rock and chapel were lit up by the most amazing silvery sunlight against a dark grey sky. By the time I had stopped the car and got out, it had gone. I waited a while, and took a couple of pictures, some of which have it fairly well lit, but not so good as the initial view! Roche Rock
Roche Rock submitted by cromagnonman : The chapel, built on the precipitous outcrop, ingeniously incorporates the bedrock in its structure. Built of large squared blocks of granite, probably quarried from the surrounding moor, its construction in this position must have been a masterpiece of mediƦval engineering. It stands two storeys high with a lower room in which, according to tradition, lived a hermit attended by his daughter who ...

I live nearby and have visited the site many times. I thought I'd share this little myth for anyone who's interested.
I mention it as it is a local belief only. https://instagram.com/p/gDDhIZwp7l/

Nice to see this site on the portal. The site is Celtic, rather than Saxon, as a Celtic saint was the first to reside there. The present chapel is Medieval.

Yes I'm sure you are right, 1409 sounds like quite a plausible date for the chapel.
I think whoever built it probably thought of himself as a saxon due to the alternate horizontal and vertical door masonry and the rounded romanesque archways.
An unusual choice of architecture for 1409 when most religious structures in England were gothic.
