A Souterrain was first recorded here in 1856, it was re-discovered during building operations in 1960 and filled in with slag and rubble. In 1973 & 1975 it was excavated by "J. Hunter" and the visible remains suggested a Souterrain, although these are extremely rare in SW Scotland.
A passageway lined with corbelled drystone walling, and roofed with capstones led into a Natural Cave. The passage, cut into a 30ft raised beach, was between 13m and 16m long; its width varied from 1.5m to 1.2m, and height from 1.7m to 2.4m due to the uneven rock floor. The capstones were 1m to 1.5m below present ground surface.
Stratified deposits were found showing evidence of occupation, including Bones and a Hearth with iron slag.
The structure itself conforms to Souterrains found in Angus, with the Natural Cave replacing the terminal bulge often found.
Nowadays the Souterrain lies partly under a road in the grounds of Ardeer Recreation Club, apparently still filled with rubble after the excavations in the 70's.
