The Gwallon Longstone (rumoured to be the tallest in Cornwall outside of Penwith) is located within the grounds of Penrice Community College, Porthpean Road close to the centre of St Austell.

The stone is a granite whopper of some 12ft and is a remarkable survivor given its position within the urban sprawl of St Austell. Associated with a now vanished barrow cemetary the longstone is probably best visited when school is on holiday, or by prior arrangment. Access by footpath from Porthpean Road.

Having had an afternoon at the Lost Gardens of Helligan, decided to call in on this stone on the way back to Padstow.

It was easy enough to walk along the public footpath surrounding the college grounds on the south side and see the stone from there, but not so simple to get a decent view because of the high fences. I managed to get a couple of pictures by climbing on top of the wall beside the footpath in a gap between the bushes, and then by holding my camera above my head to take the pictures.

This was all very frustrating as there were many people running around the playing fields surrounding the stone, but there was no obvious way in from the outside. The nice stone has a friend and companion in the form of a wheelie bin keeping it company.

I would be very careful doing that. Penrice academy takes safe guarding incredibly seriously and if they caught you taking photos during school times they’re the sort to take civil action.

The stone was there long before any school was though, The standing stone should have always had it's own access, so it can be visited by everyone - anytime, as it is it's just another way to separate us from our heritage, i've been to visit it a couple of times in the school holidays, but to be honest if i want to visit my heritage whenever i like, i should be able to do so!!!

I just wanted to correct you that the Gwallon Longstone stands in the grounds of Penrice Community College, there is no Mount Charles secondary school, there is however a Mount Charles primary school which people may visit by mistake.
