Triangle of stones near Llanddewi Velfrey

Modern Stone Setting in Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro)

Interesting triangle of stones sent in by Martin Ringer, who writes: The site is on a unmarked road that leads from the A40 road between Haverfordwest and St Clears in Pembrokshire. The road is the turning north from the village of Landdewi Velfrey toward the pretty village of Llanfallteg.

The site is on the west side of the main road a few hundred yards south of Llanfallteg. The stones look quite old but are set up in a rather strange way. As you can see from the photos, the stones are arranged roughly in a triangular setting, with one outlier to the west, just on the other side of a footpath.

These stones were added to the landscape around 1980 by the County Council Highway authority to prevent caravan parking on the roadside by the New Age/ A40 people.

Can't recall seeing it when I lived up that way in the early 70s - but as a teenager passing on a school bus might not have!

Anyhow Llanfalteg are supposed to have a History Group (though website a bit out of date) - info is:

In March 2009, the Society published a local history book "A history of a West Wales Village - LLanfallteg" ISBN 978-0-9562134-0-2. It has been very well recieved both locally and more widely. Copies are available in Whitland and other branch libraries, as well as our local schools. Copies may be purchased from the Secretary and many local shops, Llanfallteg Post Office and The Plash Inn. Price £10.

The current chair is Dave King (01437 563087) - davemking@clara.co.uk
Secretary and Treasurer is Heather Bearman (01437 563342) - hamb@btinternet.com

A quick check last Tuesday (8/2) shows that all the stones have holes drilled through them (right-through, not cup marks), suggesting they were used as gate posts at some time. One even has the metal fittings remaining!
That's not to say they weren't filched from nearby ancient sites by local farmers.

I thought these would be good to find on Street View, and indeed there they are. To me they look like a modern arrangement set up by people from the nearby large house. I'm not convinced the stones are ancient. More information or a site visit welcome.
