St Mahew’s Cross
St Mahew’s Cross submitted by Antonine : St Mahew’s Chapel taken in 2011. St Mahew’s Cross is inside the porch. Unfortunately, the church was locked when I visited. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone (Menhir) in West Dunbartonshire

St Mahew’s Chapel stands on a parcel of land called Kirkton of Kilmahew about quarter of a mile north of Cardross. Mahew or St Mochta was a prophet and disciple of St Patrick. St Mochta was a pagan Briton and convert to Christianity who died in 535 AD. The top of an ancient standing stone was unearthed during restoration of the chapel in 1955. The stone is inscribed by a crude cross. The ‘Cross of St Mahew’ dates back to the earliest Christian foundation of Kilmahew in the 6th century. The chapel itself dates from the 14th century.
