Ballahot Standing Stone
Ballahot Standing Stone submitted by h_fenton : Ballahot Standing Stone in all its glory, just waiting for the trench to be refilled and the turf replaced. 24 July 2002 (Vote or comment on this photo)
Modern Stone Monolith in the Isle of Man. Modern standing stone set up to replace an older stone which had disappeared. The location of the original stone hole was identified using geophysics, the stone hole and area around it was then excavated. The stone hole itself was dug into the bedrock, which was only 6-8inches under the turf.

Manx National Heritage in conjunction with Bournemouth University organised an event to put a new stone up using the techniques we think they used in the past. This event was part of National Archaeology Day, and took place on 24th July 2002.

Some sources suggest 200 people turned up to the event, and many took an active part in either helping drag the stone across the field or raising it.

The stone was locally sourced from Billown Quarry c.300metres to the west.

There are a further two standing stones marked on the map in this same field.

The original stone that stood here was also known as the 'Four Ways Cross Stone'. The stone is within an extensive area of ridge and furrow cultivation and it is likely that it was erected as a rubbing stone when the field became pasture.

I thought most quarries these days end up being used for landfill. In the case of the settlement at Billown quarry it was destroyed by the archaeologists over a number of years before the site was quarried.

And yet another ancient site goes the way of progress, they wont stop till every country is one huge road going nowhere.Problem is once its gone in that manner you have no way to recover it again, lost stones dont cause much of a problem, its when the entire sacred ground is removed to dig out the sand underneath. As the place is left as fishing lakes and the true ground level never gets returned to how it once was, so the past sacred ground area becomes a lake instead.True the energies could remain, but how do you erect a stone circle on a deep lake, and I cannot imagine any company allowing an Island to be build, JUST for that reason to regain the ancient site. BUT I live in hope...mmike

There are a further two standing stones in this field. There is a stone circle, more standing stones and a prehistoric settlement nearby (600metres) that are known at present. it is likely there are more missing stones et cetera.

Actually the settlement I'm thinking of may have recently been dug away by Billown quarry.

0h yes but so much better the first one was placed at the centre of the sacred ground, where the old one must have been placed in historic times. It just might be more than one sacred spot is close to where this stone was erected, which might put off the correct position being found, who knows. Always feel where single standing stones were erected in the past, almost always the very centre of the sacred ground however large it is would have been would have the stone placed right in the middle. Even places where the sacred ground is MORE an oval, the standing stone is close to the middle, as this must have some influence on the site, and its affect with the harmony and influence of the place...mmike

maybe a brand new new hole should be dug into the bedrock and a brand new stone put into it in a more "sacred spot" ?

What a wonderful idea to replace the stone, something we could take heed of here in the UK more often.Only complaint is they never erected it in the right place, as the sacred ground shows better where the picture of the stone on the rollers is shown, but better that its in the wrong place than no stone at all. Then again Im fussy, does anyone have wide angle shots of this stone please, to see how far out from its position the stone really is ? mmike.
