Burial Chamber (Dolmen) in Ávila (Castilla y León)

Passage Grave in Castilla y León. This site is one of the few Neolithic examples in the Province of Avila in Spain. It is easily reachable by taking the AV-500 local road from the City of Ávila to the small village of Bernuy-Salinero some 7 Km away.

The site is signposted at the entrance of the village and can be accessed by an earth path branching to the left of the road. People are asked to leave any vehicle some 200m beyond the branch, and walk the remaining 400m to the monument. It can be clearly seen to the left of the path, as it is protected by a low stone fence.

The "Dolmen de Bernuy" is in fact a Passage Grave formed by an oval-shaped 3.5m wide by 4m long burial chamber which is accessed through a 5m long east-oriented (92º) corridor. The whole structure was covered by a tumulus (roughly 22m in diameter) which is now almost gone. Today, the orthostats of the chamber are slightly taller and bigger than the remaining ones forming the passage.

Excavation of the site has unearthed remains from two different time frames. The older ones date from the latest centuries of the 4th millennium BC, - the assumed date of construction, - while the more recent go back to the middle centuries of the second millennium BC.
