custer visited on 30th Jul 2012 - their rating: Cond: 1 Amb: 2 Access: 4 This area had been used for many years 1904 to 1921 as a 9 hole golf course and curling pond. Maps of the golf course show the round features in the middle of the fairway for the 6th hole. Possibly then a water trap. The golf course went into decline after the war. The golf course and curling pond are on land belonging to the local hotel. The landscape has therefore been significantly altered through modern interaction. A great day out fascinating stories of vikings, railway buildings and moden social history but no ancient stone circles. Fantastic day delving around.
The first description of this site appears to have been by Norman Douglas (Arrochar, c.1971:21) who wrote that "if one stands in front of Arrochar and Tarbet railway station and looks south across the main road, over the stone wall at the roadside, and then over the next stone wall, a nearly complete circle, about thirty yards across in diameter can be seen. This circle or ring appears to be made from turf and stones built up to about three feet high. It is possible that this may be an old Moot Ring, where at one time the local population gathered to discuss the management of local affairs, the making of local laws and the punishing of offenders."
The following notes were made of the site on the outstanding CANMORE website, saying:
500m E of Stuckdhu farmhouse at c50m OD overlooking the A83/Old Toll Road. A figure of eight enclosure with well-built stone dykes enclosing two mounds, apparently glacial in origin, c100m by 70m overall. Bounded on S side by old trackway and bridge across burn, on the E by the burn. At the S end beside the burn is an artificially levelled platform. Within the upper enclosed area in bedrock outcropping is a possible hut circle/circular shieling 8m in diameter. This southern mound may have been revetted along its N edge. The northern mound is oval in plan and c15m by 22m and although probably natural appears to have loose stone accumulated on it. To the E of this enclosure and separated from it by the burn is a further rectangul ar enclosure c38m by 29m. This enclosure contains a raised platform, 12m by 13m, in its SE corner and rig and furrow spaced 5m apart. This enclosure is possibly later than the figure of eight enclosure. (see F. Baker's 'Ballyhennan (Arrochar parish): enclosure and settlement', Discovery Excav Scot, 1993:80-1)
They also report that a "supposed hut-circle...at about NN 3129 0423...appears to be nothing more than a natural boggy hollow within the SW angle of an enclosure, probably of 18th or 19th century date."
