Hillfort in South Ayrshire

Remains of a 14th century castle now occupy the site of this double period Hill Fort in Ayrshire.

Situated on a Volcanic Plug about 67m above sea level, the summit of hill is roughly 50m x 40m.
In 1985 after visits by both OS and RCAHMS, they both declared there was NO prehistoric remains at the site. Excavations a year later, and subsequent excavations in 1993 revealed the site has been inhabited since at least the Bronze Age and possibly even the Neolithic Era.

1st Occupation ; During the 1993 excavations "Gordon Ewart" of Kirkdale Archaeology made discoveries in the enclosure of the present castle which indicate multiple periods of occupation. These finds include Charcoal-rich layers of possible Neolithic date, Kilns, Bronze Age pottery fragments and Grain remains.

2nd Occupation ; A later Iron Age HillFort in which they found Shale Bracelets and Glass Beads, contained several large Wooden Roundhouses and was settled until around 500ad, when it was extensively rebuilt with a timber laced stone rampart. The fire which vitrified the Fort was dated to around 1,000ad, and seems to mark the end of the Hillfort’s existence.

Since the Norman invasion the hill has been the site of 3 Castles, the last of which are the remains we see today.
