Hillfort in Renfrewshire

Barochan HillFort is located on the summit of a small knoll in the Renfrewshire Hills.

Situated 65m above sea level, it had an approximate size of 80m x 22m.
First spotted in 1951, where it was noted by OS that the top of this hill had been subjected to artificial steepening and gave the impression of a ditch which was now filled-in, along with a now-levelled bank running around the side of the hill a short distance from the summit.

Aerial photograph revealed it to be a 'Triple Ditched Fort' (Which is now divided into four separate fields by a wall running through it)

Surround by small hillocks and flat pasture lands, this is a peaceful spot. In the late nineteenth century a local farmer moved the Barochan Cross from it's original position on the North side of Barochan Burn, to the top of this hill on the South side. Little did he know he was positioning the Celtic Cross on such an ancient site.
