Standing Stone in Anglesey. I estimate it to be 10 feet tall, it is covered with lichen.

Access: Next to a church building just off the A5025 Valley to Cemaes road; clearly visible from the road. Parking a little way to the south in a layby. Near the Black Lion pub. Access by a gate.

Note: Anglesey dig unearths largest neolithic site in Wales, within around 0.7km of this standing stone. See the most recent comment on our page for more

Wales’ earliest village? - Exploring a Neolithic neighbourhood at Llanfaethlu

Since 2014, archaeological work at Llanfaethlu, on the north coast of Anglesey, has been revealing the remains of the first early Neolithic multi-house settlement to be found in north Wales. Catherine Rees and Matthew Jones explain further.

Anglesey dig unearths largest neolithic site in Wales by Andy B on Sunday, 18 October 2015
(User Info | Send a Message)
The largest ever Neolithic discovery in Wales has been made by archaeologists investigating the site of a new school. More than 2,000 artefacts possibly dating back as much as 6,000 years have been discovered on the site at Llanfaethlu on Anglesey. [which is within 0.7km of this standing stone, see the on-page map)

The ruins of three buildings have also been uncovered by the CR Archeology team who have been on site since November 2014.

Archeologist Cat Rees said: “Until about 50 years ago all we knew about this period in North Wales came from the megalithic tombs and chance finds but this changed with the discovery at Llandegai, Bangor of a single house.

“To date less than five have been found in the whole of North Wales.

“This settlement (at Llanfaethlu) has the best preserved houses and is the only one which has more than one house.”

Speaking from the site Matt Jones said: “The number and quality of artefacts is unlike anything else in North Wales.

Early Neolithic houses found at site in Wales by Andy B on Thursday, 18 May 2017
(User Info | Send a Message)
Previous phases of work by CR Archaeology at Llanfaethlu uncovered three Early Neolithic (6000 year old) houses – two of which were almost twice the size of previous examples found in the area. A large Middle Neolithic (5500 years old) pit group containing highly decorated pottery was also excavated.
Previous excavations at the Ysgol Rhyd y Llan site uncovered three Early Neolithic houses.

Works have continued throughout 2015 – 2016 which have uncovered a fourth Early Neolithic house and extensive archaeological remains which extend the Prehistoric settlement at site into the Early Bronze age (4000 years old). Settlements of this type are unknown in the area and prior to the discoveries at Llanfaethlu only three single Neolithic buildings had been discovered in North Wales.
