Once home to over 160 roundhouses this huge fort was originally defended by a dry stone wall with two entrances to the south-east and north-east.

still worth visiting despite the neglect.
its an easy walk, and very interesting to see the contrast between this site and Tre'r Ceiri.
a few hut circles still remain in good condition, but most are a mess now.
Fantastic views as well, with this being the middle of 3 principal Iron Age hillforts on Tre'e Ceiri to the NE and Carn Fadrun to the SW.

On top of a hill that was once Forestry Comission owned, this has now been sold off to a private forestry company in about 1998-99 who wasted pretty much no time in clearing vast swathes of the pine forest that once covered the slopes.
On a clear day it was always a pleasure to clear the treeline near the top and see the world below open up with some fantastic views. Now most of the trees have gone, it's still a good climb, but the element of breathtaking surprise has gone as the panoramic vista starts to be revealed much earlier in the walk.
The hillside is now pretty desolate and the paths - once well defined through the trees - somehow seem to have become pretty vague toward the summit and it's easy to end up on the opposite side of the mountain from where you expected to be.
The wall that once surrounded this impressive site has all but crumbled to a pile of rocks and it seems since the deforestation and the subsequent exposure of the site, the tallest remaining sections have now fallen into a significantly poor state. When I first visited the fort about eleven years ago there were sections almost two metres high. These are seemingly no more. Once at the top there are a few well defined hut circles (I found a chunk of Roman-esque earthenware in the wall of one once!) amongst the heather, the best being just next to the rocky escarpment to the south-west of the summit. The two reconstructed battlements at the very top provide somewhere to sit and eat your crisps but for f**k's sake - TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME!! Some morons have seen fit to leave their plastic bags/bottles/etc. behind!
Whilst at the top, apart from the glorious views, watch out for the circling buzzards and ravens and if you're lucky you might see some lizards and adders darting and slithering through the heather.
This is easily one of the best preserved ancient sites I've visited in Wales, in much better condition than neighbouring Garn Fadryn yet not as complete as Tre'r Ceiri and well worth a visit.
