Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Dumfries and Galloway

Charlie's Well is "located in the middle of Newton Stewart to the rear of properties along Millcroft Road. Downstream from the Cree bridge on the eastern side. Very close to the river. Charlie's Well appears on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of 1851. It does not appear on mapping again after this."

Information about this well has been collected by the Can You Dig It: Lost Wells of Galloway project. They add: "This name (Charlie's Well) applies to a beautiful well on the bank of the river Cree and from which I think it is supplied by the river Cree by filtration. It is frequently overflowed by the river during floods at other times the water is remarkable for its purity".

If anyone knows anything more about this well, and whether its pure water was used for healing or restorative purposes, please add a comment here.

The Lost Wells of Galloway project is a community project, "setting out to map and better understand lost wells in Galloway, considering how we relate to these historic features now and how this has changed over time".
