Hill of Dun
Hill of Dun submitted by AstroGeologist : Facing NE (13.05.19) : The impressive Hill of Dun has a Cup Marked Boulder, a Dun and a HillFort on it's slopes (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hillfort in West Dunbartonshire

Hill of Dun used to have a large HillFort at the summit, and a Dun about halfway down the Southern slope.

Situated on a Volcanic slope of the Kilpatrick Hills, 200m above sea level, this is the most easterly of 5 hillForts in a 9km span down the north bank of the River Clyde. The other 4, from east to west are ; Sheep Hill, Dumbowie, Dumbarton and Carman

A 1955 RCAHMS report mentions that the last vestiges of the once presumably sizeable defences were detectable, but that was over 6 decades ago.
Now no remains of the hillfort are visible. No full investigation of the two sites have ever been carried out on the Hill of Dun, but it may reveal more clues in the future if it is ever given a proper excavation. The report describes a Fort defended by four ramparts that occupied the flat, broad summit of the Hill of Dun, Measuring about 200m x 150m, approx 2ha

100m lower down the hillside, the same 1955 RCAHMS report records the remains of a small Dun. Surrounding a natural rectangular hollow between two ridges of vertical strata, at an elevation of 120m above sea level, it is aligned roughly E-W, and the interior measures 18m x 7m, within walls 3m to 4m thick.

250m away from the Dun, a sandstone boulder with 3 Cup Marks was noted by "J.Bruce" in 1893, the location of which was about 100 yds north of Dunerbuck farmhouse. Later visits could not locate find boulder.
