Presaddfed
Presaddfed submitted by pab : Presaddfed, September 2012 Timber support which features in most photos on Portal has now been removed, so the more southerly chamber looks even better. Delightful location - the walk over the field feels more like a procession, with the chambers looking more impressive all the time. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Chambered Tomb in Anglesey. Here lie two chambers, both in advanced stages of decay; the north chamber has been flattened lliterally just a pile of stones but has fascinating layering in the rock on the east side.

The southern chamber is still standing, but supported by a large wooden frame; it is obviously used as a sheep shelter, and we couldn't help speculating that one day the site could make some sheep puree!

Access: A short distance off the B5109, NEE of Bodedern. Good parking, with signposting for the location, good access, and entry to field through a kissing gate.

Note: Recent excavations led by Vicki Cummings and Colin Richards find a standing stone socket in the collapsed dolmen, meaning a stone probably stood there before the dolmen was built, see latest comment for more. See also news on their work at Garn Turne

Presaddfed
Presaddfed submitted by vicky : The remains of Presaddfed chambered tomb, possibly a Portal Dolmen. It comprises two groups of stones - one consisiting of a large upright stone with a smaller leaning against it and a fallen capstone behind (in the left of the photo) and the other (to the right) still standing. It is unclear whether or not the two were part of the same monument or two different ones side by side. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Presaddfed submitted by pab : Southern chamber, sans support. There was no clue as to what has made it now safe for the chamber to be without support. Perhaps it is related to changes in stock - Welsh Black cattle are referred to in some earlier postings, but now there are sheep. Because of the look on the face of the brute looking round the stone on the right, I won't say 'only' sheep - perhaps he just ripped the s... (3 comments)

Excavations at Presaddfed by Andy B on Monday, 09 December 2013
(User Info | Send a Message)
Vicki Cummings writes: The reason we are digging at Presaddfed is to try and understand how these monuments were constructed. Our work in North Wales will not be restricted to Presaddfed however.

We are also visiting other sites and having a look at their geological composition. Were all the stones acquired locally, or were stones being brought in from elsewhere? Were people utilising erratics in these sites, and can we work out which these are?

We found a cut for a socket for the single standing stone in the collapsed dolmen – this means that this stone was placed into a socket and probably stood before the dolmen was built – whether by a few minutes, a few decades or a few hundred years we don’t yet know. We have a sample of the fill of the socket and with any luck it will contain short-lived charcoal which should date the erection of the stone. The presence of a standing stone prior to dolmen construction is very interesting, and is paralleled with sites in Cornwall where a single standing stone formed the primary and key component of the dolmen monument (the doorstone at Trevethy Quoit being the best example).

I think it was in the winter of 1802, that the southern chamber here became a home for a family evicted from a nearby house, so some antiquarian records.
