Ancient Cross in Isle of Man

The Journal of Antiquities gives us information about this collection of six carved Celtic cross slabs from the 7th to 12th centuries AD - see their entry for the Onchan Celtic Crosses, Isle of Man. The Journal includes a photograph of the church, together with drawings of the Norse Cross and descriptions of the others, plus background information about St Conachan (Connachan or Concenn) who gave his name to this village.

The Journal tells us only only of the crosses shows strong Norse origins; there is an early Christian gable cross which stood on an earlier keeill. Thurith's cross has runic inscriptions, and the head of the Kirk Conchan Wheel Headed Cross standsjust over 2 feet high. The Journal says there are another three cross slabs which are Celtic in origin and are dated to the 7th to 9th centuries.

The Journal also includes a list of reference sources for more information.
