Quinloch Muir Stones
Quinloch Muir Stones submitted by Pericles : The main upright stone but looking north up into the highlands and the region about Loch Lomond. The possible chambered cairn is off to the left and out of shoot. (Vote or comment on this photo)
These stones near Blanefield to the north of Glasgow are located about 15 minutes north of a hillfort in the middle of the muir. They seem to be in a circle, consisting of 6 main stones, 5 of which are fallen or angled against the only upright. This last has a scalloped top very similar to the main upright at the Duntreath standing stones nearby at Dumgoyach. There is no record of these standing stones either on the main OS maps or the Canmore site. This area of the Muir is ancient and has not been farmed in a very long time indeed judging by the high tussocks of moss. Also, and more importantly, I noticed a rounded fern-covered feature some 100 yards from the stones. This stood out on the Muir and after inspection turns out to be a possible chambered cairn - again unmarked or recorded.

The cairn is covered in ferns and therefore difficult to assess now but come Autumn or Spring when all the growth has died back, this cairn will stand out more. Google Earth shows the cairn as a dark green smudge if you know where to look.

This is an interesting find as the cairn would seem to be on the same size as the well-known Stockiemuir Chambered Cairn further west near the Whangie. If it is a chambered cairn on that scale it identifies another unique Clyde Cairn. The extensive fern growth covers what is a huge deposit of collapsed stones but again makes it difficult to identify the main features.

The views north up to Ben Lomond (the Beacon Hill) are magnificent from the standing stones and the chambered cairn. All about are other neolithic features which this site seems to centre: the 2 hills to the west, the Stockimuir cairn, the sacred wells at Katythirsty Hill a mile away and at Dumgoyach also, and in the distance the old church in the village with its own standing stone and then beyond that Dunglass Hill marking the strath to the east.

Hello, thanks very much for sending these in - very interesting. I'll look forward to hearing more about the possible chambered cairn when the ground is clearer. It would be great if you could add a brief page for the nearby hillfort as we don't currently have it listed, and any other nearby sites you know about.
Many thanks
