Church of Saint Beuno (Clynnog Fawr) submitted by nicoladidsbury : Eglwys Clynnog Fawr Church Ancient Sundial in the churchyard of St Beuno's Church at Clynnog. St Beuno's Holy Well is further south along the busy road. The well is reputed to have healing properties. Bachwen Dolmen is only a mile away, down the church lane, then along a farmers lane. There are also supposed to be megaliths in the foundations of the church, one inscribed with a latin c... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Carving in Gwynedd

There is an ancient sundial to the south of the church which dates from 10th Century.
Saint Beuno, the greatest of North Wales Celtic saints, was a descendant of the Prince of Powys. He founded Clynnog Fawr monastery in 616 A.D. and many more Christian establishments. Legends associate him with miraculous healing powers.

(Description from Pilgrims Trail leaflet regarding The Church of St. Beuno: "Special features - St. Beuno's Chapel on the South side of the Church; 'Maen Beuno' a flat, roughly-shaped boulder incised with a Latin cross;"..etc.) If I'd read this leaflet properly I'd have photographed the Latin cross!

Church of Saint Beuno (Clynnog Fawr) submitted by TimPrevett : On the north side of the church, there is this enormous boulder. No explanation given for it anywhere, or legend, folklore. I don't know of any other notable stone in a Welsh churchyard that is without some story of anitquity attached to it. Look inside the church, too. There is a boulder sticking through the paving slabs in one corner. Fascinating.

having passed the church numerous times, i'm intreged by the size of the church in relation to the size of the village.
also would like information as to purpose of adjacent building SE, appears to be reminiscent of chapter house.
