The Lake of Menteith between Stirling and Loch Lomond is a glacial lake comprised of four kettleholes and a depth of 10-22.3 metres. Although it is famous for Inchmahome Priory on the big island (1238) and the Earls of Menteith’s castle ruins on Inch Talla, it also contains four crannogs dating from the second half of the first millennium BC.
The Lochend, Dog Isle and Port of Menteith crannogs were found to have horizontal oak timbers within a boulder matrix. One theory is that each crannog site, apart from Inchmahome East, occupied its own bay with land of arable potential immediately adjacent to it.
Dog Isle (Inch Talla) Crannog: (NN 5676 0025) A still visible island in the SW corner of the lake.
Port of Menteith Crannog: (NN 5810 0011) “ … a submerged crannog covered by 4 feet of water in the north-eastern angle of the loch at the Port of Menteith (Sir John Murray & Fred Pullar (1910, 16))
Lochend Crannog (NS 5897 0025) located underwater and off the shore of the Lochend Chalets in the SE end of the Lake.
Inchmahome East Crannog (NN 5771 0064) located to the east of Inchmahome and marked with two buoys.
