Ffynnon Faglan
Ffynnon Faglan submitted by pab : View from near the well's location towards St Baglan's Church and the sea beyond. How many thousands of pilgrims must once have sat on this hillock after visiting the well, before setting off back to the church refreshed & ready to tackle the rest of the journey to Bardsey Island.... Now only a squiggle on a map - presumably to be eventually removed in a future 'update'! (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Gwynedd

The ancient well/spring shown on the 25K OS map as being alongside a path just east of St Baglan's Church now exists only on maps. It is listed by RCAHMW (NPRN 32204) with the following description:

"Wall with formerly a stone basin surrounded by a wide seat. Now 2 low walls and a small depression are all that remain (1967-05)."

No entry since 1967.....and perhaps no official interest either, so that it seems to have been quietly lost to posterity without anyone telling the land owner that it should be respected and protected.

Despite much searching, we could find no trace in September 2011 - and shortly even the line of the path where it once stood will be obliterated. I think it is important to record this sad loss - such sites need to be protected from the insidious way in which land owners etc (allegedly) deal with the inconvenience of rights of way giving access to these jewels.

I think that even the access across the field to the nearby church is considered inconvenient rather than something to be cherished.

Ffynnon Faglan
Ffynnon Faglan submitted by pab : If only they could talk! This tree, growing wrapped around a beautifully rounded rock, was probably already fairly mature when the well and its surrounding walls were in good order. What a shame they can't tell us where the well was, and who obliterated it. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Ffynnon Faglan
Ffynnon Faglan submitted by pab : Above the well: Perhaps we are too harsh on previous (or recent) generations for removing or covering up the odd stone... Just look what this tree is doing to some rocks it has found in its way! Perhaps it got the idea from watching mankind? (Vote or comment on this photo)

Ffynnon Faglan
Ffynnon Faglan submitted by pab : Extract from COFLEIN map for the location, showing well alongside path. Neither could be found Sept 2011. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Ffynnon Faglan
Ffynnon Faglan submitted by pab : The best way to locate the well seemed, from the OS map, to be to follow the path between Reiniast and Plas Farm. In fact, at SH 45971 60560 where the path should join the field, there is now new fencing & the hedge is starting to 'heal' the gap. This is the spot where the path once came through. There is nothing wrong of course in a farmer expecting walkers to walk around a field perimeter... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Ffynnon Faglan
Ffynnon Faglan submitted by pab : The expected location - with cultivation having extended right over the probable surroundings and up the adjacent slope. Sept 2011
