Llanvihangel-ar-Arth is a village a few miles west of the A485 between Llanlllwni and Llandysul. A Dark-Age inscribed stone stands in the vestrey of St Michael's church. The stone was dug-up in the churchyard and then left to stand there for some time, but recently it has been taken inside the church for safety reasons.
The stone bears a Latin inscription from the Romano-British period; this inscription recalls HIC JACET ULCAGNIUS FILIUS SENOMACILI which is probably translated as 'Here lies Ulcagnus (Olcanus) son of Senomaglus' and is thought to date from between 500-510 AD.
The church here is of an ancient date and stands upon a mound, perhaps originally the site was that of a pre-Christian settlement. Churches dedicated to St Michael the Archangel (The Dragon Slayer) often stand upon high places, such as pre-Christian mounds and hilltop sites.
Coflein gives information about two incised stones at this church - one commemorating Ulcagnus, the other bearing an incised cross - see Coflein NPRN 275684. For more information about the church and its history see Coflein NPRN 101772. The Journal of Antiquities also has an entry for this inscribed stone - see the sixth entry on their page for Some Inscribed Stones in Wales.
