Modern Stone Circle in Stirling

First reported by the West of Scotland Archaeology Service on 15th May 2012, this recently discovered stone circle lies close to the line of the Old Military Road near Balquidder, in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

A news item about this circle, described by WOSAS as a fake, can be found on the WOSAS web site. They tell us: "this circle, comprising five rough boulders, does not appear on any available Ordnance Survey maps of the area. However, rather than being a previously-overlooked antiquity, it appears that this stone circle was erected in the relatively recent past, as comparison with the Google Streetview cover of the area indicates that the circle was not present when their data-collection car passed that way in March 2009."

Clicking on the above link will give a photograph of the stone circle plus a view from Google Maps, which should help to narrow down the location, which is near the Kingshouse Hotel.

A number of other ancient sites are also recorded in/near Balquidder, including: Canmore 24151: a stone setting and Canmore 24152: a stone circle, both dated to the Neolithic/Bronze Age in the record headings, but discounted as being stone circles in the record text.
