Standing Stone (Menhir) in Gwynedd

Situated on high ground within a pastoral field to the west of Pant Afon Bach the maenhir (long stone, taken from the modern Cymraeg/Welsh & Breton) is visible from the narrow road that passes to the east of the field as it heads towards Llanrug. This is a tall narrow stone that tapers from the base to about 2m in height. It is weather beaten and appears to have been worked, with little lichen (fungi) present. I did not notice any rock art but there are pack stones visible at the base. I sought permission prior to my visit.

There are several maenhir of similar proportions in close proximity that heighten the significance of this stone.

Re: Pant Afon Bach Maenhir by Anonymous on Wednesday, 22 November 2023
I was of the understanding that these stones were erected by Sir Hugh Rowlands (formerly of Plas Tirion and the first Welshman to receive the Victoria Cross) in the 19th century to commemorate each battle his military son took part in against the Boers and Zulu. Stand to be corrected though.
