Craig Cwmbychan Cairn
Craig Cwmbychan Cairn submitted by pab : Viewed from the cairn on Mynydd Mawr (SH540546), nicely aligned with Moel Eilio (SH555577) - which also has a cairn on its peak. Photo taken 16.00hrs 16 May 2010. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Situated on a hill overlooking the Snowdon Ranger Youth Hostel and Llyn Cwellyn, this cairn really only becomes visible when seen from above - in our case when walking up to Mynydd Mawr.

We did not have time to do a detour to investigate it properly when we noticed its contrast with the bracken, and had to make do with these photos from just over half a mile away. Hopefully some else will manage to have a closer look if they happen to be in the area and have more time?

COFLEIN (MPRN 400489) describes it in the following terms:

"Remains of a burial cairn, probably dating to the Bronze Age, situated within open moorland in a prominent position on the summit of Craig Cwmbychan ridge. Stone built and circular on plan, measuring 11m in diameter and up to 1m in height. The cairn has been disturbed in the past, leaving a large hollow in the centre which has been built up to form a drystone shelter."

Craig Cwmbychan Cairn submitted by pab : Viewed from the flanks of Mynydd Mawr (approx SH535549) when we first noticed it. The line of Snowdonia peaks from Moel Eilo to (I think) Yr Aran are visible in the background.
