Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Devon

St John's Well at Tavistock (SX478739) is tucked into the hill in a public park area on the east bank of the River Tavy. A footpath runs parallel to the river bank on this side of the river, and a fairly slippery (it had been raining) flagstone path leads off at right-angles across the grass towards the little granite-arched well, and its capstone with 'St John's Well' carved on it.On the opposite side of the river, some walls still stand, bordering the footpath, which are from the ruins of the Abbey, destroyed in the Reformation. I initially had some trouble finding it, but it may be accessed from either of two bridges: the large main traffic bridge which crosses the river from the shopping area, Town Hall and Market, going east, then turning to your right (south), down a path into the park (that's how I found it). You can then, if you wish, keep going, visit the well, then cross a footbridge a little further on, which takes you back into the large public car park south of the main shopping area.

St John's Well (Tavistock) submitted by cazzyjane : St John's Well. Situated on the spot of a small chapel used in 1470 by John the Hermit. It is thought to be lucky to throw a pebble over your left shoulder into the well. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

St John's Well (Tavistock) submitted by AngieLake : The granite arch of St John's Well can just be seen to the right of the two trees on the opposite (east) bank (and close to the bright orange leaves on the twigs sticking out of the tree in the foreground). The photo was taken as I stood with my back to the ancient perimeter walls of the ruined Abbey's grounds. The river is the Tavy, which flows south from Dartmoor, giving Tavistock its name. T...

The markings on the stonework, are I think the Tavistock Abbey trefoil- visible on some bits of Abbey related or recycled Abbey stonework around the town.

Wayside Marker Stones on Dartmoor, 27 July by Andy B on Saturday, 10 July 2010

Wayside Marker Stones on Dartmoor

Tue 27 July 10.00–14.00

A guided walk along old tracks and highways on the western flank of Dartmoor, passing ancient stone crosses and turnpike milestones that informed earlier travellers. …

This walk gives an introduction to the many wayside marker stones that survive on Dartmoor. The main guide is a Dartmoor National Park warden, familiar with the mineral working on the moor. The local Milestone Society have selected a route that passes by striking wayside corsses, a selection of turnpike milestones and stone boundary markers around the parishes of Whitchurch and Sampford Spiney. During the circular walk we will see large medieval granite crosses and smaller engraved markers that defined the roads over the moor in the 19th century. We will walk along the tracks that wete used to carry raw material off the moor and intrepid travellers safely to the markets on the edge of the moor.

Location: Start and finish at the Car Park on Whitchurch Down at NGR SX 497 733; off the road between Gate Cottage and Middlemoor village turn. Leave A386 at the Whitchurch turn and head NE through the village and up pntp the own (Golf Course). The car park is on open ground on he N side of the road.
