St Mary's Well (Culloden)
St Mary's Well (Culloden) submitted by KiwiBetsy : The well is set at ground level inside a high stone block wall. The number of clouties in nearby trees and the flowers floating in the spring itself, indicate that the well still has a significant number of visitors. About 10 yards west, behind the spring enclosure, are the remains of a pool and evidence of piping giving the impression that water from the spring was once used for bathing. St Mary's Well (Culloden) submitted by KiwiBetsy : This well is also known as Tobar na Coille, Well of the Wood or simply Culloden Well. Take the A96 out of Inverness towards Nairn for a short way. Turn right signed Smithton. Just before the road goes over the railway line you will see a Forestry Commission carpark on your left. There is a maze of paths but if you head up hill and veer left you will come to a foot bridge over the railway line. Cro... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: St Mary's Well (Culloden) by Anonymous on Saturday, 28 November 2009
Thanks for your interest in The Clootie Well (St Mary's Well ) in the
Culloden Forest by Inverness.

Our local paper, The Inverness Courier ran an article on the recent cutting
down of the trees that held the cloth offerings. The Forestry Commission,
who own and manage the forest admitted that they carried out the work to
'make the site more attractive'. Unbelievable, do they think that Callanish
or Salisbury Plain would look better without those unsightly piles of
stones?

Re: St Mary's Well (Culloden) by Anonymous on Saturday, 17 October 2009
May I let you know about what appears to be problems caused by Forest
Enterprise or others to the Clootie Well (St Mary's Well) in Culloden
Forest, Inverness.

This site comprises an enclosed natural spring surrounded by many trees
within the Culloden Forest. It is the local custom for pieces of cloth (the
Clooties) to be tied to the branches of the trees near the well. This is a
very ancient practice but is still followed today and some people treat this
ritual, traditionally carried on the first Sunday in May, with reverence and
respect.

Unfortunately on my latest visit a number of the trees and branches around
the Well had been cut down together with the cloth offerings thus completely
destroying the ambience of the site.

I have asked the Forestry authority for an explanation and will forward it
if/when received. This violation of peoples' beliefs and the destruction of
the atmosphere of a special place is to be condemned

It would be great if visitors could go now and tie more cloths to the
remaining trees even though it isn't the traditional time. This would help
to restore the look and feel of the place and make a very clear statement
about its survival as a living monument

Thank you for your time

Graham, Inverness
