Re: Hillsborough Iron Age hillfort - Volunteers wanted by AngieLake on Tuesday, 12 April 2022
(User Info | Send a Message)
"A new volunteer group has been established to help clean up and maintain the local nature reserve and scheduled monument, Hillsborough Hillfort in Ilfracombe, and it is appealing for new members to join the efforts. The Friends of Hillsborough group will meet for the first time on Wednesday, April 20, and then on the third Wednesday of each month.

Volunteers will be helping to look after all aspects of the local nature reserve, from protecting the Iron Age ramparts, keeping them clear of bracken and scrub, to managing wildflower meadows to help pollinators and keeping paths open and walkable. Funding to buy the tools for the group has been provided by the government's Farming in Protected Landscape Programme through the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, administered by the North Devon Coast AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty)."

Re: Hillsborough Iron Age Promontory fort damaged by metal detectorists by w650marion on Thursday, 29 July 2021

We also discovered metal detecting holes on a Welsh hillfort recently, so took photos of the square holes and reported them to Gwynedd Archaeological Trust.
They have requested that we continue to keep our eyes open when out walking and report damage found on scheduled sites.
