Barrow Cemetery in AndalucÃa
The burial ground lying on the western flank of the Cerro de Castellón contains large, rectangular, cyst tombs consisting of slabs of rock sunk into the ground around the edge of the grave, which was dug in hitherto unused land and then covered with flat flagstones. The fact that burials were not made one upon the other suggests that some sort of marker may have been erected on the surface above them, such as the headstones found at the head of some tombs. In other areas around and about different forms of tomb have been identified, including some anthropomorphic ones cut into the rock at the north-east of the hillside.
The objects recovered from the village nearby have been dated to the period covering the 8th to the 10th centuries AD, although many of them were probably already quite archaic in their own day. This burial ground, however, has been dated to Visigothic times, which would suggest that the settlement itself could have been begun in the 7th century, before the arrival of the Arabs and the Berbers.
