Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Ceredigion

In the church dedicated to St Ursula and her 11,000 virgins at Llangwyryfon (Llan-y-Guryrddon)) near Llanrhystyd there is an early Christian inscribed stone.

The piece of slab stone dates from the late 5th to early 6th century and bears a Latin inscription in memory of DOMNICI IACIT FILIVS BRAVECCI and when translated 'Here lies Dominicus the son of Braveccus' or 'He lies here, son of Braveccus'. The stone was found in the churchyard and was probably originally larger in size.

St Ursula was a British Christian princess who was martyred along with her 11,000 followers, all virgins, at Cologne in the 4th century CE. It is unknown whether she had any connection with this part of Wales, though it cannot be entirely ruled out.

Thankyou for that information. The stone "might" have rested in the churchyard for a short period maybe on its journey from the farm to the church.

The stone wasn't found in the graveyard but on a farm about a mile from the village.
