Ancient Village or Settlement in Conwy
Situated on the lower slopes of the Tryfan North Ridge the site can be reached by following the footpath that leads from the car park midway along Llyn Ogwen. The route is a steep ascent but not very long. I was up and down in less than an hour. I followed the grid references (SH65836005, 65826003 & 65716008) provided by Coflein but I could not identify any structures at these coordinates. I therefore relied on my eyesight and noted, and photographed, the structures that I identified as possible hut circles and enclosures at the OS ref provided above. Interestingly, the site is scheduled and Ancient Monuments has the site identified at a different ref (SH657600) to that of Coflein.
The site is described as comprising of an unenclosed settlement with apparent preserved structures including the foundations of at least 5 hut circles along with contemporary enclosures, platforms and small clearance cairns.
During my visit I tried hard to picture the described structures provided by Coflein at the OS references provided but alas I failed to spot anything of significance. So I went higher and looked down across the area. It was a bitterly cold January morning and I noted several wild goats that had descended from the Glyders (mountains) grazing close to several structures worthy of investigation. Now I may be centuries out but my photos do indicate human activity. Could these structures be the possible Iron Age/Romano British settlement described?
