Fitz’s Well lies 1 mile southeast of Okehampton. From the main road through Okehampton turn south into George Street, past the hospital and under the A30 bypass. Then the road climbs to a hairpin bend to the right after which the verge widens on your right. The well and cross are on this wide verge about 250 metres after the hairpin bend.
If one walks on the moor at night there is a danger of meeting the ‘little people’ and being put under the spell of being ‘piskie led’. When this happens the victim is enveloped in mist and cannot find their way off the moor. Legend says that a couple were returning from church one night when they became piskie led. Eventually they came across this well, drank of it’s waters and broke the spell. In gratitude, they had a cross erected to mark the spring.
