Coed Aber Roundhouse
Coed Aber Roundhouse submitted by pab : Coed Aber Iron Age hut circle and Standing Stone. September 2012 (Vote or comment on this photo)
A very pleasing hut circle immediately on the west side of the path up to Aber Falls, Gwynedd. This location has elements of both iron age and bronze age usage, as well as later medieval occupation. A low ring survives with a larger stone which acts as a give-away if you are used to visiting prehistoric sites!

It is located right alongside the path to the wonderful Rhaeadr Fawr waterfall from the village of Abergwyngregyn, just minutes from the A55. There was no information sign at the location when we happened to be passing (suspect it had been blown away!), but the location looked interesting enough for me to take some photos for later follow-up.

I was later able to confirm from COFLEIN and CCW material that the site was excavated in 2009, and COFLEIN records it as: 'Site of Iron Age hut circle, excavated during Coedydd Aber project by John Roberts and Bob Johnston. Found on excavation to have been built around a pre-existing Bronze Age standing stone, and then later re-used (possibly in the medieval period) as the site of a corn-drying kiln.'

Access is very good - the path alongside it is one of Gwynedd's full access walks, suitable for wheelchair use all the way to the waterfall - although their literature does acknowledge that powered wheelchairs are probably better in view of the distance and some gradients.

The walk is pushchair friendly but still with a few challenging spots. Allow 90 minutes for a brisk there-and-back visit; it is recommended to allow longer!
