Ancient Village or Settlement in Iceland
The following text has been partially copied from: https://www.minjastofnun.is/gagnasafn-/ahugaverdir-stadir/flokatoftir/
Flókatóftir have long since been thought to be the site of the first winter-stay by Norse men in Iceland. Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson is said to have settled here for a whole winter in about the year 865. That‘s where Flókatóftir, Flóki‘s ruins, get their name. So fans of the more fictional series 'Vikings' should be very interested in this historical place.
In Landnámabók, Hrafna-Flóki and his men are said to have put all their focus on fishing, so much that they forgot to bring in fodder – hay – for their livestock. This oversight resulted in the death of all livestock in course of the winter.
In springtime Flóki climbed up a mountain in the vicinity. When he reached the top he saw, looking north, a bay filled with ice. He therefore named the country Iceland.
Flókatóftir consist of thirteen archaeological features, six of which are the original Flókatóftir surveyed in the 19th century.
