Ancient Village or Settlement in Gwynedd
Situated on a rocky outcrop above Gellilydan. The site can be reached by following the narrow road that links Gellilydan to Maentwrog. The site is on farm land and permission to visit should be sought from the nearby farm. I am informed that the settlement has been damaged by quarrying and stone clearances. This makes interpretation difficult. Disused land boundaries are evident and the bracken growth isn't helpful.
However, although identification of the remains is complicated there is enough evidence to determine that this was a settlement that probably dates back to the Iron Age/Romano British period but with later multi period use.
There are possible remains of several hut circles contained within at least two enclosures. The enclosures have incorporated the natural rise of the outcrop, and there are raised banks of stone and earth to a height of 3m suggestive of a defensive settlement.
