Ancient Village or Settlement in Gwynedd

Situated on a natural series of terraces that ascend to the NW and below Moelwyn Bach mountain from the marshland known as Merddwr Yr Hebog (backwater of the hawk). The site lies about 150m above the point at which the Nant Ystradau (stream of the vales) meets the marshland floor as it meanders northwards towards Llyn Ystradau (Tanygrisiau reservoir).

According to Gwynedd Archaeological Trust (GAT) the site consists of ' 5 circular structures, a rectangular building and an enclosure. ' GAT also considers the site to be 'the largest of its kind in the district.'

During my visit I was drawn to two large circular buildings lying close to a scree from a foothill of Moelwyn Bach. The buildings are five metres appart but with an oddly shaped annex attached to the east side of the more westerly building. The walls of the westerly building were 2m in height, with the eastern building at 1m in height. Both circular buildings had an 8m interior diameter. The buildings had clearly been repurposed as sheep folds. I noted the presence of other buildings to the west but the landowner had erected barbed fencing making access problematic and, given the remoteness, no body around to ask for permission to visit.

The settlement's location is well concealed from the marshland below. And the buildings described would have been sheltered from the worst of the weather's elements, whilst also providing unhindered views of the valley below.
