A Pictish Symbol Stone in Highlands

Grid reference NH746845 is the original location of this cup marked stone, which is to the north west of the present junction of the A836 with the A9 outside Tarlogie. The stone is now housed at the Tain Museum, Tower Street, Tain, IV19 1DY. Thanks to The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) website, which gives us directions to the museum, together with photographs, a drawing plus the archaeology and the history of the stone and surrounding area - see their web page Ardjachie Farm, Tain, Ross & Cromarty.

The TNA page also gives a link to the Canmore website. Canmore describes this as a Pictish Symbol Stone. Further information can be found at Canmore ID 14736, which adds that the stone was "discovered during ploughing around 1960," and "this irregular boulder was clearly chosen to be a symbol stone because it already bore a large number of prehistoric cupmarks. The incised symbols comprise a ‘wheel’-like disc with central hub and twelve spokes, carved above a plain L-shaped step symbol." They date it to the 7th century.
