I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 13th May 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Belstone Boundary Marker: Only 1km from the Sticklepath Boundary Stone, this supposedly pre-Conquest stone at the junction of the B3260 and a minor dead-end road which goes north east to a farm. I got some strange stares from the cars as I photographed this stone, which is no longer on the parish boundary, presumably to accommodate road improvements. Had it not been for the busy road, this would have been in a gloriously peaceful countryside location, with lovely views northwards (the hedge to the south was too tall to see over). I think the description in the Pastscape entry has been confused with the Sticklepath BS, near Lady Well, as this stone is triangular in shape and the only marking we could see was a partial bench mark on its front. The acute angle of the minor road junction with the B3260 made the turn right out of the busy road a little tricky, but possible after waiting for a sufficiently large gap in the traffic.

Marker Stone in Devon

According to Pastscape, this is one of two pre-Conquest incised boundary stones in Belstone Parish - see Pastscape Monument No. 444133 for more details - the other being adjacent to Lady Well at the western end of Sticklepath village (see nearby sites below).

In 1904 it was mistaken for a wayside cross, but by 1937 this had been corrected to a boundary marker by E. Masson Phillips, who described the stone as being identical to the Sticklepath Boundary Stone (this stone is triangular in profile; did the entries get confused in being transcribed to Pastscape - am trying to get hold of a copy of Masson Phillips' book to check).

In 1974, a field investigator commented that "the stone is no longer on the parish boundary The top of the stone has been damaged or broken".

On the front of the stone, facing the busy B3260, is a partial bench mark.

If visiting this stone, parking is available in the narrow lane just to the west of the stone; please beware the speeding cars which go along the road at this point.

Belstone Boundary Marker
Belstone Boundary Marker submitted by Anne T : The stone from it's eastern side - it is triangular rather than rectangular, indicating that the Pastscape entry has it's description confused with the Sticklepath boundary stone 1km to the east. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Belstone Boundary Marker
Belstone Boundary Marker submitted by Anne T : The southern face of the stone, facing the busy B3260. Apart from a partial bench mark and some cracks/dings, we couldn't make out any carvings on this stone at all. If the road had not been there, this stone would have been in a lovely location, although I understand it is no longer on the present day parish boundary, presumably moved to accommodate road improvement works. Belstone Boundary Marker
Belstone Boundary Marker submitted by Anne T : Seen from its western side, as I stood nearer the road, the stone does not look very thick. Apart from what looked like a partial bench mark on its southern face, we could see no incised markings on this stone at all. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Belstone Boundary Marker
Belstone Boundary Marker submitted by Anne T : Getting closer, the damage to the top of the stone is clearly visible. Pastscape tells us the current height of the stone is 2ft 3ins, but how tall is was originally, I'm still trying to find out. Am seeking a copy of Masson Phillips' 1937 book "The Ancient Stone Crosses of Devon" book or article from the Devonshire Association Reports and Transactions. (Vote or comment on this photo)
