DeniseNorth visited on 2nd Nov 2020 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Stunning church and village. A real surprise find, completely by accident, as was going to the pub! A typical Celtic style myth of beheading. St Urith.

St. Urith's well
St. Urith's well submitted by AngieLake : This shot shows the 'new' well to the left, with the original well underneath the metal cover, with the old walling covered in ivy, above it. According to the builder working nearby, the council are going to reinstate the original well soon. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well in Devon. Possibly the most interesting of sites as it is associated with the 6th century Celtic Saint Urith who was martyred when the villages cut her head off with a scythe! Her shrine was in the church but lost at the reformation.

The well itself is not the prettiest and consists mainly of a concrete slab encorporating the original stone slab with its basins! Let us hope it can be sensitively repaired in the future.

St. Urith's well
St. Urith's well submitted by AngieLake : The church with its huge tower stands proudly at the top of a steep cobbled square in this attractive village. There is ample car parking there, and a visit to the church as well as the 'well', is recommended. St Hieritha's tomb is inside, and other memorials to her, including the carving on the north side of the pulpit, which seems to have suffered from a lot of 'nose rubbing'! Look out for t... St. Urith's well
St. Urith's well submitted by AngieLake : St. Hieritha (or Urith) was supposed to have been beheaded in this village and where her blood fell, the spring gushed forth! Her image, complete with head and sickle [!], is kept it tip top order in a niche on the south side of the west tower of the church. This was a place of pilgrimage for many years and it's plain to see how the money may have kept this church in such good condition as it i... (Vote or comment on this photo)

St. Urith's well
St. Urith's well submitted by AngieLake : Walking east past the church (which is at the top of a sloping, cobbled square), and the pub, look out for this turning on your left. Hard to see with the bins there, but without asking someone, I'd never have found it. (Luckily it was the builder working on the neighbouring cottages!!) (Vote or comment on this photo)

St. Urith's well
St. Urith's well submitted by AngieLake : Approaching the well - on the left - along an access lane leading off the main west-east road through the village. The original well is covered by the metal plate and a new, far too modern, concrete aperture had been constructed to hold the basin. There's no water in it now, just sediment. St. Urith's well
St. Urith's well submitted by AngieLake : Looking back the narrow lane towards the main street going east-west through village. The original well, under the metal cover, may soon be reinstated. Meanwhile the concrete replacement is very ugly and has no atmosphere. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St. Urith's well
St. Urith's well submitted by AngieLake : The extremely ugly monstrosity that was built next to the actual holy well of St Urith. She'll be turning in her grave! (Told by builder working next to this site that the council are planning to reinstate the original well soon, lifting off the metal cover that is hiding it now. See next photos.) (2 comments)
