Settlement South of Manod Bach
Settlement South of Manod Bach submitted by TAlanJones : The modern boundary wall separating the cluster of huts. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Village or Settlement in Gwynedd. The site is situated within a dip between the foothills to the south of Manod Bach. The settlement appears to be multi-period with a possible cluster of hut circles and large oval enclosures. There are also boundary walls that appear later and there is the remains of a probable rectangular hut currently overgrown by gorse bushes some 50m east of the hut circles. A further rectangular hut can be seen in the valley below, some 1k south of the settlement.

A modern boundary wall separates the cluster of hut circles. I counted 5 huts that are small, some up to 5m in diameter with the walls raised to about 0.4 in areas.

The enclosures differ in size with the largest about 70m long and occupying a central position within a modern field boundary to the north of the cluster of huts.

There is a footpath that leads directly to the settlement site from Cae Clyd, Blaenau Ffestiniig.

And Archwilio calls grid ref SH712437 Cwm Teigl Multiperiod Landscape, Ffestiniog (GAT18202), nearby at SH71304385 (GAT1490) Bron Manod, Enclosed Homestead Three hut circles, diameters 24/22/15ft and remains of a possible fourth 80-90ft courtyard entirely robbed of stones are now grass grown banks. Semicircular terraced area adjoins the site on the SW side and here a number of pieces of slag were found in the mole hills, which also showed the earth within the semicircle to be darker than in the surrounding field. Interesting landscape. Grid ref finder looks interesting too, I haven’t worked out how to use it yet!
