Leading from Capel Currig to Dolwyddelan this ancient trackway was probably used by the Roman military during their occupation of NW Wales in the late 1st cent AD until 120 AD. This section of the track rises to the foothills of Moel Siabod before descending towards Dolwyddelan. Today it passes through an ancient landscape with evidence of prehistoric activity in abundance.

It then descends through a forest via Clogwyn Llwyd, Sarn Yr Offeiriad and Beudy Brynbugelyn before reaching the A470 at Dolwyddelan. The existing trackway would have provided a more direct route from Caer Llugwy (the Roman Auxiliary Fort) at Capel Curig to Tomen y Mur (Roman Auxiliary Fort) nr Trawsfynydd.

It is possible that this was an older Drovers route: it is known that where necessary the Romans had utlilised ancient drovers trackways not the least because they were driven straight through what was at the time a heavily afforested North Wales. It appears as though the old A5 which traverses the country from the coast to north-east Wales and beyond was such an ancient trackway. One of the identifiers for an adopted route is the Welsh farm name 'Pen y Palmant' which means 'pavement top' plainly referring to 'pavementum' the Roman topping stones for roads: there are at least two of these identifiers in North Wales leading from Ruthin to Wrexham no doubt to trade livestock at was what the ancient Wrexham so-called 'beast market'. In fact that is a reality which in my opinion relocates the Roman 'Bovium' of the Antonine Itinerary from Whitchurch to Wrexham: they are both the required 'ten miles' from Holt named in that itinerary.
