Tobairandonaich
Tobairandonaich submitted by Vibracobra23 : A very rare monochrome real photographic postcard of the cup-marked stone at Easter Tobairandonaich in Perthshire, titled "Cup-Marked Stone, Derculich". Publisher not stated, though the photo is identical to that in an article by John H. Dixon in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland for 1922 see journals.socantscot.org/index.php/psas/article/view/7527 to download the article, ... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Missing Rock Art and Holy Well in Perthshire. As recorded in 1922: A cup marked stone with 19 cups was found forming the doorstep of an old stable at Easter Tobairandonaich.

The stone is oval with diameter varying from 2'8" to 3'2". Tobairandonaich is a deserted hamlet and completely ruined. It owes its name to a holy well situated 30 yds to the S.

However no trace of this stone was found in 1975 after a thorough search of the ruined hamlet.

Also a holy well, now partly silted up and dry at NN 8866 5319. It is dry-stone lined and circular, 1.0m in diameter and still 1.0m deep. The name is not known locally, but more elderly locals still know it as a holy well.

Another cup marked stone nearby which is also lost http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=59125

Note: A rare postcard from 1922 of a cup marked stone now lost to history, and another close by, also lost. Would anyone in Perthshire like to have a look for them?

Cup-marked Stones in Strathtay, Perthshire by John H Dixon, 1922 by Andy B on Wednesday, 20 September 2023
(User Info | Send a Message)
Cup-marked stones at a variety of sites are described. The stone at Bailandun is partly embedded in a burial mound. At Balnabeggan the stone has 59 cups, some of which are connected by grooves. Stones from Glen Brerachan and Balvaran which were previously reported are illustrated here. A stone known as the Priest's Basin has a 'cup' measuring 2 feet in width and is thought to have an Early Christian origin.

Probably the bloke to ask about this is David Cowan. He's from the area and investigated the stones for donkey's years. www.leylinesexplained.com/
    He's always a helpful guy. Perhaps he's a member.
