Burial Chamber(Dolmen) in Conwy

Located close to the banks of a stream this site is now very badly damaged with the four remaining stones forming part of a field bank. The capstone which is the largest lies on the edge and of the other three only one is still upright.

I have looked extensively for this ruined Cromlech. I own part of the dam disaster site on the west side of the B5106. The Afon Porth Llwyd had a new course dug and is completely changed post dam disaster and the line of the road is also new since then. This is confusing when referring to older maps of the site.

I obtained permission from the Power Station to investigate north of their car park by the river bank. My reckoning is that the remains are buried under the pylon there as Coflein agrees. There are so many stones brought here by the disaster that it is impossible to determine anything original belonging to the cromlech. The area is also extensively overgrown!

Yes, very sad.

I would give the map reference as SH778668. Take the A road between Llanwrst and Glan Conwy. When you see the sign for Dolgarrog Railway Station turn Right (or Left, depending on which direction you are travelling) and proceed on foot. Cross the bridge over the River Conwy and continue up the track road. Its on the left, the gate should be open, if you pass a sheep shed you've gone too far. The site is damaged, as much by the electric box as anything else.
Enjoy, it took me four visits to locate it. Timotheus 14/12/2008

Fascinating BW silent footage of the disaster's aftermath. Nothing stood a chance in the face of those boulders washed down from the mountain.

Damage to Porth Llwyd by TimPrevett on Monday, 23 April 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
It seems the harm done to this site was due to the Dolgarrog Dam Disaster on 2nd Nov 1925, when a reservoir high up on the west of the valley was breached. This made a lower but already full reservoir burst with a wall of water said to be fifty feet high sweeping much of the village away, and killing 16 people. The cromlech was engulfed in the torrent, causing the damage. There are remains here somewhere to be seen.

Finding Porth Llwyd by TimPrevett on Monday, 23 April 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
Attempted a look last Friday evening. Arrived in advance twilight, park on LHS of road having crossed bridge into Dolgarrog. Steps down to what looks like a picnic area on the south side of the confluence with the Conwy. The record puts the stones near the base of one of the pylons. However, it was extremely dark, the canopy of trees, and smothering undergrowth made it hard to make much out, and it was getting rather hazardous. Another time in better conditions, I guess.

Looking in George Nash's book of last year suggests this still survives, albeit very ruinous. Will be checked out sometime by me, if I'm not beaten to it!

According to Coflein, this now lies beneath hydro-electric works - whether that means under concrete foundations, or under a flooded area, I am not sure. Point being, it is effectively destroyed. Sad.
