Standing Stone (Menhir) in South Lanarkshire

Illustrated on the 1864 Ordnance Survey map, this standing stone used to stand near the northern end of Selkirk Street, Braidwood. This stone is recorded on Canmore ID 46543 which says that "no trace of this stone remains; the buildings against which it was sited have been removed .... (also) recorded on OS 6" 1898."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) has a page for this standing stone; see their page for Braidwood, Carluke, Lanarkshire, which has an image of the 1864 OS map, showing the position of the stone, together with a brief archaeology and history. TNA add in their notes that "it is supposed to have stood at the side of a Roman Road, passing from Lanark, across the bridge of the Mouse beneath Cartland Crags, through Lee Valley, across Fiddler’s Burn at Chapel, and thence by Braidwood into the main street.”

Note: Do you have any information about this standing stone? If so, please add it to this page - thank you.
