Hillfort in Dumfries and Galloway

The Doons is a Bronze Age univallate hillfort situated on Doon hill to the north of Shawhead. it is within the grounds of the Barnsoul campsite and can be seen easily fron the road out of Shawhead.

Canmore ID 65014 which says: "The fort on the summit of Doon Hill, measures 190' N-S by 214' within a steeply scarped bank, above which there seems to have been a stony rampart, now supplanted by a stone wall. The scarp is well-defined all round, except to the S, where it is only c. 1' high; passing round to the W, it rises to 7' or 8' in height, maintaining this height to the E end. In the interior rises from within the rampart to a central area 7'-8' higher."

In 1992 I lived in a house very nearby this hill fort when we had just moved up to Scotland. We were invited by Archie, the farmer at Barnsoul, to walk up and see the fort. It was a steady climb up the hill, but the views were great and I certainly would have felt well defended if I'd lived here. At this time, whilst we were interested in history and archaeology, I didn't have the fascination I do now. Also, I didn't own a working camera.

Whilst here it would be worth detouring to the Glenkiln Sculpture Park which (used to) include Henry Moore Sculptures. Whilst we lived there someone decapitated the 'King and Queen' statue and apparently threw the heads in the reservoir. The head was found, the statue was repaired and put back in place. I see from an update by ViewRanger from October 2013 they report that following the theft of a statue, three major pieces were removed and put into storage. It is still a beautiful walk around Glenkiln Reservoir with its remote location and red squirrels.

The Doons Hillfort in Archaeology Ireland by Andy B on Friday, 13 June 2014

[Important Note - I've added this to the wrong 'Doons' hillfort. I've kept this post on as we don't currently have a site page one for The Doons, County Leitrim] Tatjana Kytmannow, Thorsten Kahlert and Chris Hunt report on new discoveries in County Leitrim. Archaeology Ireland, Vol. 24, No. 3 (Autumn 2010),

Introduction
For the last few years the authors have been investigating a mountainous upland in County Leitrim, centred on Leean Mountain, west of Manorhamilton and east of Sligo (see Archaeology reland 18 (2), 36-9). Leean Mountain is the most eastern part of a limestone mountain ridge (Fig. 1) that runs eastwards for c. 11km from Cope s Mountain in County Sligo (NGR 73000/41000) over a series of massifs to Fawnarry Mountain in County Leitrim (NGR 81000/38000).

The Glencar Valley and the Benbulbin range lie to the north, while Lough Gill lies to the south. We have discovered more than 100 sites on Leean Mountain, including standing stones, cairns, an enigmatic boulder circle, 40 hut sites and miles of pre-bog walls. Few areas in western Ireland show such richness in archaeological sites, from domestic dwellings to ritual monuments. The monuments, pollen analysis, 14C dating of peat samples, analysis of lithics and advice from experienced geologists hinted at an apogee of activity at Leean during the Bronze Age and Iron Age.
