"Stidwell (Spring)" in blue on OS map (No.28, Dartmoor, Outdoor Leisure series), is situated just south of the Ten Commandments Stone at Buckland Beacon. (The beacon was one of those in a chain of warning beacons at the time of the Armada.)
Terry Faull, in his book ..'Secrets of the Hidden Source - In Search of Devon's Ancient and Holy Wells' .. tell us that there is "good public access but uphill across some uneven moorland."
I found it easier to approach from the top of Buckland Beacon, but walking (sometimes clambering!) down the narrow track that follows the dry-stone wall south down the steep hill. (I was on the west side of it, btw.) Look out for the point at which another wall joins this wall from the SE direction, and take a look over the main wall and you'll see the spring tucked in the corner where they meet.
Terry Faull continues:
"This is an interesting site as the parish boundary between Ashburton and Buckland-in-the-Moor is deliberately shaped to fit around the site of the spring. A document of c.1200 calls this place Blindwell. As late as 1771 a boundary dispute was settled by providing a drinking trough at Stidwell which was half in one parish and half in the other so that there was equal access to the water from the spring.
The substantial granite block wall which forms the boundary here runs from the road to Buckland up on to the moor towards Buckland Beacon, and Stidwell is to be found where this curves and another wall joins it to form a small enclosure. A jumble of stones marks the site of the spring although the drinking trough has gone.
Traditional uses: Lost "
