Standing Stones in Perthshire

Situated on the Tullibardine road leading NW from Auchterarder, this is an interesting group. The most obvious is a single out on a grassy traffic island but there are another two in dense undergrowth at the side of the road.

The single is heavily girdled, and very easy to access all round, tilted heavily to the east. The other two were almost covered by brambles, so had to be cleared (Scottish Megarack Group meeting) The NE stone has four large, strange gouges on the northernmost face, but little else of distinction. The SW stone, however, Scott maintained had a handprint on the south face. And there was indeed a handprint, faded but still clearly delineated, a medium sized left hand pointed downwards with the thumb straight down. Very interesting, and unusual. Worth a visit for this alone. This is the single stone, showing the girdle mark.

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also feature a page for this stone - see their entry for Easthill, Auchterarder, Perthshire which has photographs of the stone at the roadside, the 2 in the hedgerow, the northern stone and the southern stone. They give directions for finding this site, together with a brief archaeology & history.

Canmore ID 26104 classifies these stones as a Bronze Age Four Poster Stone Circle; their most recent report from 1967 (reviewed in May 2000) tells us: "This feature, the remains of a 'four-poster' is as described by Hutchinson (1893). The profile of the mound is evident in the line of the fence bordering the road and suggests a diameter of c. 23.0m. Within the field the mound is so ploughed down as to be unsurveyable. The two prostate stones lie in the junction of the roads - the northerly one is more than half-covered by coarse turf - the southern stone is competely covered but can be located by probing."

Auchterarder
Auchterarder submitted by hamish : These are the hedge stones the nearest one you can easily touch but the other one I didn't attempt. Nick and Andy say there is a hand print on the far one but it was inaccessable to me at the time. Must go back to see if there was any damage done at the time of the G8. Auchterarder
Auchterarder submitted by hamish : This is the stones just on the outskirts of Auchterarder, easy to see but not so easy to access. The one in the middle of the island is of course the first you visit the second on the edge of the hedge you can touch, but the third is most difficult with rusty barbed wire and nettles and brambles. I visited these stones today; all three are in great shape, the eastern rapidly being overgrown with brambles.

The middle of the road megalith by Andy B on Monday, 10 February 2014
(User Info | Send a Message)
"While looking around for information and stories about this monument, I came across some great images of the standing stones during the 2005 G8 summit that was held in the nearby fancy hotel and golf complex of Gleneagles. The stone setting was on the route of the ‘G8 Alternatives’ march and some of the protesters tarried there for a while, one megaphone-bearing guy using the stone as a prop to lean on, the groove proving useful as a footrest."

Does the hand carved into this stone bear any relationship to the hand carved on the underside of one of the arms of the cross of Muiredach at Monasterboice?

According to RCAHMS Canmore Database only the two stones on the field edge were standing in 1967 with a further two stones prostrate. It would seem that the one on the traffic island has been re-erected at some point. The site is considered to be a four poster. RCAHMS labels it as Easthill.

This four-poster circle sat on a pronounced mound originally, but the mound was destroyed on the S side when the road was built, and has been ploughed away on the N side in the field. However, it's profile can still be seen by looking from the road. Two stones sit on the mound, surrounded by brambles behind the hedge, while another stone sits isolated on an island of grass at the junction of Tullibardine Road and Easthill Road. The fourth stone is also thought to be on the island, covered entirely by the grass.

The two hedgerow stones both feature interesting carvings. The NW stone has 4 large gouges cut into it's northern face, but the SE stone is much more interesting. On it's southern face is carved a medium-sized left hand-print, pointing down the way. The hand is quite faded, but can be easily found by running a hand over the surface of the stone.

The stones on the island in the road have fared less well. When Hutchison visited in 1893, both were lying prostrate, the more northerly one (now standing) half-covered by turf, and the more southerly one completely covered. The more northerly stone has a distinctive girdle mark around it's centre, and leans sharply to the E. The more southerly stone is presumably still buried in situ.
