Cribarth Cairns
Cribarth Cairns submitted by cerrig : This shows the 2 cairns, and nearest the camera, the ring of slabs and the Red Sandstone boulder, all in a line. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cairn in Powys. The Cribarth is a rocky craggy hill in the South West of the Brecon Beacons national park. It looks down on Craig y Nos castle and Dan yr Ogof showcaves in the Tawe valley below. From its summit can be seen the sea to the South, and the Central and Western Beacons to the North.

On two of it's several peaks are cairns, made entirely of the local gritstone boulders, mainly of a uniform loaf size, with larger boulders on the kerbs.

The southernmost cairn (at this location) is on the highest peak and has a trig point as a companion. This cairn has seen some disturbance, with it's centre dug out and mostly missing now. The more northerly cairn is intact, seemingly undisturbed (location of this site is SN82901443).

These cairns are quite close to Saith Maen stone row to the North(approx 1 km) with several other cairns and hut circles in the vicinity.

A curious and officially unverified addition to the Northern cairn, in amongst the very rocky surroudings on the peak, is an untidy ring of large Gritstone slabs (similar to the ones used for Saith Maen) with a single Red Sandstone boulder in the centre of them.

This is the only such boulder on the peaks, and is again similar to the Red Randstone boulder used in Saith Maen itself.

Cribarth Cairns
Cribarth Cairns submitted by cerrig : This is a view of the Cribarth hill, taken from a pull in on the A4067 Sennybridge to Swansea road, looking South. Somewhere in the cloud are the cairns, and also Saith Maen stone row. Luckily for the sake of the photos the cloud had cleared by the time i had trudged to the top. Otherwise i would have forgotten the camera, and just enjoyed the slightly spooky but also magical atmosphere of a ...
