Museo Arqueológico Nacional
Museo Arqueológico Nacional submitted by thecaptain : The entrance to the splendid Spanish National Archaeology Museum, in Madrid. Taking pictures inside is not encouraged. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Spanish National Archaeology Museum, on Calle de Serrano in central Madrid, is a splendid museum to visit, with many wonderful artefacts and displays set out very well on three floors of this large museum. The displays start with ancient pre-history and run almost up to the modern day.

Start at the basement level, where the display rooms begin with human evolution, the first hunters, beginnings of modern man and then the first farmers. It then moves on to the Bronze Age, with many splendid items to be seen, including several carved steles taken from dolmenic chambers around Spain, a superb bronze and gold sword, an alabaster idol, and some most exquisite patterned gold bowls.

The rooms then move on to the iron age, with celtic villages and burial practices well shown. A couple of rooms are then dedicated to the prehistory of the Canary Isles and the Balearic Islands.

Moving on, we see many items and displays from Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. Up to the ground floor, and we are now into Roman times, with much to take in, including some lovely mosaic floors.

We then move on to perhaps the jewels of the museum's crown, the Visigoth displays from Toledo, with all the golden crowns and other items. Absolutely superb. The museum moves on through the coming of the Christians and into the middle ages.

The second floor of the museum houses displays from the 10th century onwards, the coin collections and temporary exhibitions.

Outside, in the gardens, is an underground built representation of the main panels from the Altamira caves, possibly the oldest and most beautiful cave paintings in Europe, showing a herd of bison and other animals.

The museum also has a decent shop, with many books in multiple languages. Its website is man.mcu.es but it is only in Spanish

The museum is free to enter on Sundays, but is inexpensive at other times, being only a few Euros.

As of early June 2009, there is extensive building work going on. Museum admission is currently free, but many displays, including the Altamira recreation, are inaccessible.

I really cannot recommend this wonderful museum enough. I visited it twice during my recent 5 days in Madrid, and that was still not enough to take everything in, and indeed I didn't even have a quick look at the upstairs floor.

Many of the items on display are quite breathtaking, and it is all presented extremely well.

My only small gripe is that the descriptions and explanations are only in Spanish, and there were no English language leaflets available when I was there. I did however get a French leaflet which helped my visit, although it was very basic in its information. But then would an English museum have its displays in many other languages ?
