Ancient Trackway in Conwy
Recorded by Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust in 1994 and again in 1995 during an archaeological study associated with the Pentrefoelas Windfarm development, this ancient trackway is considered to have been a Roman Road originally.
Situated within the upland moor to the east of the A543 that cuts through the Denbigh Moors, the trackway follows a route north easterly from a predicted (now fossilised form) site at Rhyn Park, Caer Llugwy. At its best preserved areas, i.e. Bwlch y Garnedd to the OS ref, the trackway measures 5m wide and it is defined by parallel ditches over a meter wide and 0.4m deep. The trackway changes its direction to the east at the crest of a ridge and the OS reference SH9170055450 is provided at that point. The track then continues passing Nant Heilyn where it would have forded Afon Alwen (prior to the reservoir). The distance from the Rhyn Park to the OS ref is 3.5k.
The track is referred to locally as a coach road suggesting its continued use as a passage through the moors, and cartographic evidence suggests that it became disused between 1818 and 1839. Having walked the 1.6k along the track from Bwlch y Garnedd I would suggest wet resistant footwear as the track itself is mostly waterlogged. However, there are occasional dryer sheep tracks that follow alongside.
There are a number of prehistoric sites in this area and I suspect that this track had been a main route through the moors for millennia.
